Cleaning antlers.
« on: December 16, 2012, 05:08:55 pm »
I got a buck this year that wasn't done rubbing the velvet off his antlers for some weird reason. How do I clean the blackened blood & dried pieces of velvet off the rack ? Just going to mount the rack & part of the skull cap.

About the only thing you can do is soak in water to loosen it up and peal it off.  I shot one years ago that still had some on the tips....they are still darker the the rest of the rack.  I think it look nice this way.

As Yote said above, you will have to soak em. If the rack is stained, add some bleach to the water. After you have let it soak, bring the water to a boil and cook the rack for about an half to 1 hour. This is necessary to harden the rack if velvet was still on the horns.

Long ago, I did not hear about the issues discussed.
